STEM Outreach
NNI participates in many different Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) outreach activities including visiting area schools, hosting visits by area school children on campus, and coordinating job-shadowing experiences for local high school students interested in nanotechnology and biomedical applications.
NNI has developed a “Nano-to-go” resource library to support faculty efforts to engage K-12 student groups in nano-related learning activities. These activities are designed to help students, teachers and parental chaperones to develop an understanding of how science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) provide essential tools necessary to develop an understanding of issues in environmental and health sciences and engineering.
STEM outreach activities that NNI personnel have participated in include:
- STEM career day and Institute workshops for junior high and high school students (Workplace Learning Connection)
- Project HOPE
- Open Doors, Open Minds Conference for middle-school girls
- NanoDays at the Science Center of Iowa in Des Moines
- LEAP
